Glacier country
on foot.
An 12-day trek from Passu along the Batura Glacier through high pastures, mountain camps, and one of the Karakoram's great ice corridors.
The Batura route works because the glacier is not the destination. It is the constant. The trail stays close enough to the ice for the landscape to feel immediate, day after day.
The trek starts at Passu and climbs into Yunz on the first trail day. Yashpirt the next, on rougher moraine and glacier-edge terrain. From there the route moves deeper into the upper Batura valley, with a flexible exploration day at the higher camp before the descent retraces the line at a different pace.
What makes the trek distinctive is the balance. The glacier is genuinely raw country, exposed and elemental, but the pasture camps give the trip warmth. Yunz and Yashpirt are real grazing settings, used through the summer by Wakhi communities from Passu. The trek lives in that pairing: the ice on one side, the high pasture on the other, and a camp-to-camp rhythm that earns both.
It is one of Upper Hunza’s more immersive treks. Once the trail leaves Passu, the road disappears quickly, and the trip settles into a self-contained mountain rhythm that lasts most of a week.
Three sides
of the route.
Leaving Passu for the glacier
The trek begins with a clear shift from the road corridor into a much bigger and more remote mountain environment. By the end of the first day at Yunz, the highway feels like another world.
Pasture camps above the ice
Yashpirt and the higher pasture camps are part of how Wakhi communities use this country in summer. The trek doesn't just visit them, it borrows their rhythm. Greener camps, big mountain walls, glacier always present.
Real time in the Batura landscape
The flexible exploration day at the higher camp is what separates this from a quick approach trek. Distance, scale, and a chance to walk further into the upper valley before turning the route around.
What the
route feels
like.
Batura is two kinds of country running side by side. The glacier itself is hard country: moraine, scree, ice edges, and the kind of light and dust that settles into your gear by the second night. The pasture camps are something else. Greener, softer, scattered with summer livestock and Wakhi shepherd families who have been using these grazings for generations.
The trek lives in that pairing. Ice on one side, high pasture on the other, and a camp-to-camp rhythm that earns both.
The walking is sustained rather than technical. Long days, real altitude, and underfoot terrain that ranges from grass to moraine to glacier edge. The route does not require ropework or expedition skills, but it does require comfort with consecutive nights in basic camps and a body willing to spend several active days in a row in mountain country.
The trip suits trekkers who want a more immersive Hunza experience than a base camp trek delivers, and who like the idea of a route shaped as much by inhabited grazing country as by raw glacier. The cultural layer is part of the trek, not an extra.
How the journey
moves.
Islamabad north into Hunza, transition through Karimabad to Passu, then onto the trail through Yunz and Yashpirt and deeper into the upper Batura. Descent retraces the route to Passu and back to Karimabad for a softer close.
The full route,
day by day.
Arrive in Islmabad
Arrive in Islamabad, meet your driver, and transfer to your hotel for a light first day before internal travel and trekking days begin.
Travel into Hunza
Continue north toward Hunza, usually by flight to Gilgit when conditions allow, or by road if needed, then drive onward into Karimabad.
Travel to Passu
Continue into Upper Hunza and settle in Passu, the natural base for the Batura route and the point where the trip shifts from valley travel into trek preparation.
The trek begins
Leave Passu and begin the trek toward Yunz, where the route separates from the road and starts to settle into a camp-based mountain rhythm.
Trek to Yashpirt
Continue to Yashpirt on a more demanding day where moraine and glacier-edge terrain become more central to the route.
Deeper into the upper Batura
Continue deeper into the upper Batura route, where the balance of glacier, rock, and high pasture gives the trek its particular character and the camps feel more removed from the valley below.
A full day in the upper valley
A full day in the upper Batura landscape, exploring farther from camp as conditions allow and returning for another night in the high country.
Begin the descent
Begin descending toward Yashpirt, retracing the upper route with a different perspective now that the higher section has been fully experienced.
Trek back to Passu
Complete the trekking section and return to Passu. The shift back into lodge comfort feels welcome after multiple camp nights on the trail
Return to Karimabad
Drive back through Upper Hunza to Karimabad, where the lower-altitude setting and familiar comforts create a softer contrast with the camp-based days just completed.
Travel south to Islamabad
Continue south to Islamabad, traveling by flight from Gilgit when conditions allow or by road if needed, with a final overnight in the capital.
Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward flight, closing a trek along one of the Karakoram's great ice corridors.
What to know,
practically.
Pacing
A progressive glacier-and-pasture trekking itinerary. The first days move steadily from arrival into Upper Hunza and Passu. The middle becomes a proper camp-based route with consecutive walking days. The return through Passu and Karimabad gives the trip a softer close.
Activity Level
A trek active route suited to experienced trekkers or strong hikers comfortable with altitude, uneven moraine and mountain terrain, multiple camp nights, and limited comforts. A clear step up from lighter Hunza journeys.
Flight and road flexibility
As with all travel in northern Pakistan, flights between Islamabad and Gilgit depend on weather conditions, and road conditions can affect timing. The itinerary is designed to remain flexible when logistics shift.
Who this suits
Trekkers who want a more immersive glacier landscape and a stronger mountain rhythm than a classic Hunza itinerary provides, without moving into expedition terrain.
