Two mountains,
one arc.
An 12-day route that pairs the hike to Fairy Meadows beneath Nanga Parbat with the forts, villages, and high road of Hunza. Two distinct settings in one trip.
View itineraryThe first half of this trip lives at Fairy Meadows. The second half lives in Hunza. The contrast between them is the point.
The route opens with the long drive north to the Raikot side of Nanga Parbat, then the jeep track and the hike up to the meadows themselves. Two nights in the cabins, days to walk and look properly, a mountain that gets bigger every time you turn around. By the time you leave, the meadows have done their work.
Then the trip shifts. Down the trail, back in the vehicle, and onto the Karakoram Highway into Hunza. Karimabad as the base. Baltit, Altit, Ganish, and the village lanes around them. Up to Duikar for the wide view. Then north again through Attabad, Gulmit, and the Passu corridor before the long return south.
It works because the two sections balance each other. The meadows give the trip its mountain weight. Hunza opens it back out into culture, comfort, and the wider valley. Most travelers find the contrast lands harder than either section would alone.
Three sides
of one trip.
Fairy Meadows beneath Nanga Parbat
The hike in earns the setting. Forest, switchbacks, and a clearing that opens onto one of the most direct views of an 8,000m mountain in Pakistan. Two nights in the cabins is what makes this section feel real.
The road north
The Karakoram Highway carries this trip between its two halves. Cliffs, canyons, river, and the slow build of mountain country as you push north. The drive is part of the trip, not a transfer.
Hunza, forts to Passu
After the meadows, the valley feels different. Karimabad, Baltit and Altit, Ganish, and the village lanes settle the pace. Then Attabad, Gulmit, Passu, and Hussaini bring the second wave of mountain scenery before the route turns south.
How the journey
moves.
Islamabad north to the Raikot side of Nanga Parbat, jeep and trail up to Fairy Meadows, then back down and onto the Karakoram Highway into Hunza. Central Hunza, then Upper Hunza, then the long return south.
The full route,
day by day.
Arrive in Islamabad
Arrive in Islamabad, where you are met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The first day stays light so you can settle in before the long drive north.
Travel north toward Nanga Parbat
Leave Islamabad and drive north toward the Raikot side. A long travel day, but the one that creates the transition from city to mountain corridor and sets up the Fairy Meadows approach.
Jeep approach and hike up
Continue by jeep along the access track, then hike up through forest to Fairy Meadows. Settle into your cabin and take in the setting beneath Nanga Parbat.
A full day in the meadows
Spend the day in Fairy Meadows. Walk, look, return. This is the day that makes the section feel earned rather than rushed.
Hike out and drive into Hunza
Hike out from the meadows, descend by jeep, then continue by road onto the Karakoram Highway and into Hunza. Arrive in Karimabad in the evening and settle in.
Baltit and the old village
After the mountain section, the pace shifts. Baltit Fort, the old village lanes, orchards, and time for the everyday texture of central Hunza.
Altit, village life, and Duikar
Continue through Altit and the surrounding villages, then climb up to Duikar for the valley's strongest viewpoint. Human scale and mountain scale, in the same day.
Attabad and on north
Travel north through the valley toward Attabad Lake and into Upper Hunza. The country opens, the road becomes more dramatic, and the trip moves into its second mountain chapter.
Gulmit, Passu, and Hussaini
A full day in Upper Hunza through Gulmit, Passu, and Hussaini. The Passu cones, the suspension bridges, and the corridor where the photography most travelers know about gets made.
Return through the valley
Begin the journey back south through Hunza, with selected pauses where the scenery deserves another look before continuing on.
Travel south to Islamabad
Continue south to Islamabad, traveling by flight from Gilgit when conditions allow or by road if needed, with a final overnight in the capital.
Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward flight, closing a route that paired the meadow beneath Nanga Parbat with the forts and villages of Hunza.
What to know,
practically.
Pacing
More active than a classic Hunza itinerary, especially through the Fairy Meadows section where the access is part of the experience. The Hunza half then opens the trip back into comfort, variety, and a different kind of attention.
Activity level
Active but not a full trek. Includes the hike into and out of Fairy Meadows, uneven mountain terrain, and a steady amount of walking through Hunza and Upper Hunza. Suits travelers comfortable with real movement without committing to a trekking-only itinerary.
Road access and flexibility
Travel in northern Pakistan involves long road days, changing conditions, and remote access on parts of this route. The trip is planned and handled with experienced local support throughout, and adapts when conditions shift.
Who this suits
Travelers who want stronger mountain atmosphere, real movement through the landscape, and the contrast of pairing Fairy Meadows with Hunza in a single coherent trip.
