The full shape
of Hunza.
A 13-day route from Karimabad north through Attabad, Passu, and the high road to Khunjerab. Forts and orchards, lake light and mountain corridors, given the time to register properly.
View itineraryThis is the route through Hunza when you actually want time in the place. Thirteen days from Islamabad to the Khunjerab Pass and back, with the valley's cultural foundations on one end and the open mountain corridors of Upper Hunza on the other.
The first half of the trip lives in central Hunza. Karimabad as the base, with days into Baltit, Altit, Ganish, and the village lanes around them. Time at orchard edges and artisan workshops. A hosted meal in a Hunzakut home. The kind of detail that makes the rest of the trip land harder.
Then the route moves north. Attabad Lake, Gulmit, Ghulkin, Borith, Passu, Hussaini. The Karakoram Highway opening into a different scale of country, where the peaks step back from the road and the valleys widen. The trip closes at Khunjerab, the high pass that marks the northern frontier, before easing back south through the valley you now know.
It’s our flagship route because it shows the full register of Hunza. Settlements and altitude. Forts and lake water. Daily life and high mountain roads. All in one well-paced trip.
Three sides
of one valley.
Karimabad and the cultural heart
Days in the historic core of Hunza. Baltit Fort, Altit, Ganish, orchards, and the village lanes that hold the rhythm of daily life. Slower, denser, the foundation the rest of the trip builds on.
Attabad and the opening north
The valley shifts. Turquoise lake water at Attabad, then the road into Upper Hunza past Gulmit and Ghulkin. Country gets wider, quieter, more dramatic. Cultural density gives way to scale.
Passu, Hussaini, and the high road
The northern corridor delivers the scenery the photographs are made of. Cathedral spires above the highway, suspension bridges over braided rivers, and the long climb to Khunjerab where the mountains finally hand you over to nothing.
How the journey
moves.
Islamabad to central Hunza, then north through Attabad into Upper Hunza and the corridor of Passu and Hussaini. Climb to Khunjerab, ease back through the valley, return south.
The full route,
day by day.
Arrive in Islamabad
Arrive in Islamabad, where you are met at the airport and transferred to your hotel for a quiet first evening before the journey north begins.
Travel north to Hunza
Continue north toward Hunza, traveling by flight to Gilgit when conditions allow or by road when needed, then drive into the valley and settle into Karimabad.
Baltit and the old village
Explore Baltit Fort and the old village lanes of Karimabad, with time for local handicrafts, orchards, and the everyday texture of Hunza's historic core.
Altit, Ganish, and local life
Continue through Altit Fort and the older settlement of Ganish, with time for a hosted cultural experience that adds local flavor and context beyond the historical sites.
Duikar and valley viewpoints
Head up to Duikar and the surrounding viewpoints, where central Hunza opens into wider valley views and a stronger sense of mountain scale.
Attabad and on to Upper Hunza
Continue north through the valley toward Attabad Lake and into Upper Hunza, where the landscape opens into broader roads and bigger mountain scenery. When conditions allow, time on the lake adds another layer to the day.
Gulmit, Ghulkin, and Borith
Spend the day moving through Upper Hunza's villages and landscapes, including Gulmit, Ghulkin, and the Borith area, with time for local atmosphere as well as scenery.
Passu and Hussaini
Focus on the Passu and Hussaini corridor, where some of Hunza's most dramatic scenery sits close to the road and selected walking adds a lightly active element to the day.
Upper Hunza at a slower pace
A second full day in Upper Hunza gives the region room to register properly, with more time for scenic pauses, village atmosphere, and the landscapes that define the northern corridor.
Drive to Khunjerab
Continue north for one of the most dramatic drives in the region, where altitude, openness, and distance give the day a very different character from the settled parts of Hunza.
Return through the valley
Begin the journey back through the valley, with selected pauses where the scenery deserves another look before continuing south.
Travel south to Islamabad
Continue south to Islamabad, with a final overnight in the capital that gives the itinerary a more comfortable and complete finish.
Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward flight, closing a route that has moved from Hunza's cultural landmarks into the broader landscapes of Upper Hunza and the far north.
What to know,
practically.
Pacing
Built with a balanced rhythm so each part of Hunza gets enough room. Heritage and village life on the Karimabad end, wider mountain landscapes through Upper Hunza, then Khunjerab as the northern bookend. Nothing rushed.
Activity level
Light active. Village walks, fort tours, viewpoints, and selected scenic walking in Upper Hunza. Doesn't require trekking fitness, but expect steps, uneven ground, and meaningful time on the road between mountain destinations.
Flight and road flexibility
Travel in northern Pakistan depends on weather and operating conditions, especially the Islamabad to Gilgit flight. The route is structured to adapt cleanly when overland travel is needed.
Who this suits
Travelers who want a fuller experience of Hunza rather than a short highlights circuit. People who'd rather spend three days in Karimabad than half a day. Photographers, slow travelers, anyone who wants both cultural depth and the wider scenery of Upper Hunza in one trip.
