Beneath Rakaposhi,
on foot.
A focused 9-day trek through Minapin Valley to one of the Karakoram's most direct base camp settings, climbing through forest and pasture into open alpine country.
View itineraryThe Rakaposhi trek does one thing, and does it well. The route climbs steadily out of Minapin Valley toward a base camp setting that sits closer to a 7,800m mountain than almost any other approach in the world.
The first half of the trip eases you in. You arrive in Islamabad, fly or drive into Hunza, and spend a night in Karimabad with light walking to settle the body before the trail begins. Then the trip changes. You leave the road at Minapin and climb through forest, meadow, and pasture toward Hapakun camp, then onto base camp itself.
The reward is not in covering distance. It is in the way Rakaposhi reveals itself slowly through the day, then commands the entire view from camp. Most travelers spend the morning at base camp before descending. The mountain, by then, has changed how the trip feels.
Three moments
that define the route.
Leaving the road behind
The trip changes the moment the trail begins at Minapin. Forest and pasture replace switchback driving, and the body settles into a different rhythm.
The base camp arrival
The reward of the trek is not a summit, it's a setting. Rakaposhi rises directly from camp, immediate and immense in a way photographs flatten.
Morning at altitude
The extra time at base camp is what separates this route from a quick in-and-out. You wake there. You watch the light shift. The mountain stays.
How the journey
moves.
From Islamabad north into Hunza, a transition day in Karimabad, then onto the trail at Minapin and up through Hapakun to base camp. Descent and return to the valley closes a clean, focused arc.
The full route,
day by day.
Arrive in Islamabad
Arrive in Islamabad, where you are met at the airport and transferred to your hotel for a quiet first evening before the journey north begins.
Travel north to Hunza
Continue north toward Hunza, usually by flight to Gilgit when conditions allow, or by overland route if needed, then drive onward into Karimabad.
Karimabad and Eagle's Nest
Settle properly into Hunza before the trek begins. Time in Karimabad, a gentle outing to Eagle's Nest, and final gear preparation before tomorrow's trail day.
The trek begins
Drive to Minapin and begin the trek toward Hapakun. The route climbs through greener slopes and pasture terrain before the mountain setting starts to open out.
Climb into the high country
Continue higher toward Rakaposhi Base Camp as the terrain opens and the mountain presence becomes more immediate, leading into the trek's main alpine setting.
Morning at base camp, then descent
Spend the morning at base camp, then begin the descent toward Hapakun. The extra time at base camp gives this route more depth than a quicker in-and-out trek.
Return to Hunza
Complete the descent to Minapin and return by road into Hunza, where the shift back into the valley feels noticeably different after several days on the trail.
Travel south to Islamabad
Continue south to Islamabad, traveling by flight from Gilgit when conditions allow or by road if needed, with a final overnight in the capital.
Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward flight, closing a route that reached the base camp of one of Pakistan's most recognizable mountains.
What to know,
practically.
Pacing
The trip begins with a softer arrival and short transition in Hunza before the trek. Once on trail, the rhythm becomes more focused and physical, with consecutive trekking days. The return to the valley closes the route without overstretching it.
Activity Level
A genuine trek with sustained walking, uneven trails, and steady elevation gain. No technical climbing required. Travelers should be comfortable with multiple active days, longer walking hours, and basic mountain conditions.
Flight and road flexibility
Travel in northern Pakistan depends on weather and operating conditions, especially Islamabad to Gilgit flights. The itinerary is designed to remain flexible, with overland alternatives when needed.
Who this suits
Active travelers who want a real trekking experience without committing to a longer glacier route or expedition-style objective. A clean, focused mountain trip with meaningful payoff.
