The wider
side of the north.
A 10-day route through Baltistan, from Skardu's lake country and the heritage valleys of Shigar and Khaplu up onto the Deosai Plateau and Sheosar Lake.
View itineraryBaltistan is the broader, barer side of northern Pakistan. The valleys are wider, the mountains step back from the road, and the country between them carries a different sense of scale than Hunza.
The route centers on Skardu and works outward. Days at Upper and Lower Kachura, where clear water sits up against cultivated edges and bare mountain walls. Time in Shigar at the fort and through the surrounding villages. Continuing east into Khaplu, where the regional identity sharpens further.
Then the trip turns up onto Deosai. The plateau gives the route its defining stretch of openness: high rolling country, wetland plains, distant peaks that feel pulled back by the scale of the ground in front of them. Sheosar Lake closes that section. The final days work back through Skardu with a flexible day kept as a weather buffer and a quieter close.
It is a Baltistan trip, not a checklist trip. The valleys, the lakes, the forts, the plateau. Different chapters of the same regional story.
Three sides
of Baltistan.
Shigar and Khaplu
Baltistan's heritage valleys hold the trip's human texture. Fort architecture, cultivated settlement, and a regional identity that is distinctly Balti rather than borrowed from elsewhere in the north.
The lakes at Kachura
Clear water, cultivated villages, and bare mountain walls sit unusually close together at Kachura. One of Baltistan's most visually concentrated settings, and a useful counterpoint to the openness of Deosai.
Deosai and Sheosar
The plateau gives the trip its defining stretch. High rolling country, open sky, distant peaks held back by the scale of the ground itself. Sheosar Lake closes the section.
How the journey
moves.
Islamabad to Skardu, lake country and heritage valleys around the city, then up onto Deosai and Sheosar before working back through Skardu for a quieter close.
The full route,
day by day.
Arrive in Islamabad
Arrive in Islamabad, meet your driver, and settle into the hotel for a calm first night before internal travel into Baltistan.
Travel into Baltistan
Continue north into Baltistan, usually by flight to Skardu when conditions allow, with an overland alternative when needed. Settle into Skardu and start to take in a region that feels wide open.
Upper and Lower Kachura
Spend the day around Upper and Lower Kachura, where clear water, cultivated edges, and steep mountain walls sit close together. One of Baltistan's most visually varied settings and a strong opening day.
Shigar Valley and Fort
Travel into Shigar, where fort architecture, cultivated settlement, and a dramatic mountain backdrop come together especially well. Time at Shigar Fort and through the surrounding village.
Khaplu and eastern Baltistan
Continue deeper into Baltistan toward Khaplu. The landscape opens again, and the regional identity sharpens through road scenery, heritage architecture, and valley life.
Return toward Skardu
Return toward Skardu and let the journey breathe before the high plateau section. Lighter scenic stops along the way, depending on routing and pace.
Deosai and Sheosar Lake
Travel up onto Deosai and continue to Sheosar Lake. The route opens into high rolling country with a scale and atmosphere entirely different from the valleys below.
Cold Desert and Skardu contrasts
Explore another side of Baltistan through the Sarfaranga Cold Desert, open valley scenery, and selected viewpoints around Skardu. After the openness of Deosai, this day brings a different final perspective.
Travel south to Islamabad
Fly south from Skardu to Islamabad when conditions allow, or travel by road if needed, with a final overnight in the capital.
Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward flight, closing a route through Baltistan's lakes, forts, plateaus, and mountain settings.
What to know,
practically.
Pacing
A soft arrival, gradual settling into Baltistan, and a fuller middle through the heritage valleys and the plateau. The flexible day at the end gives the itinerary a more composed close and a natural weather buffer.
Activity Level
Not a trekking itinerary, but full days in mountain country with longer scenic drives and light walking at forts, viewpoints, lakes, and plateau settings. Suits travelers who like big landscapes without the physical demands of a trek.
Flight and road flexibility
Travel into Baltistan depends on weather and operating conditions, especially the Islamabad to Skardu flight and the access road onto Deosai. The itinerary is designed to flex when logistics shift.
Who this suits
Travelers who want a wider sweep of northern Pakistan than a valley-only trip. People drawn to plateau country, lake light, and heritage settings rather than to peak-bagging or trek mileage.
